The annual crime rate of Cortland County stood at 862 cases in 2020, as compared to the 750 complaints filed in 2019. Of the reported offenses, 100 were violent crimes while 760 were property crimes.

Aggravated assaults led to 51 complaints, which was the highest in the violent crime category. Around 620 complaints were filed against larceny-theft, which was the highest in the property crimes category. This was followed by complaints against burglary, which accounted for more than 130 cases.

Over ten years from 1998 through 2008, crime rates increased in Cortland County by six percent. Unfortunately, the level of violent crimes rose by approximately fifty percent for the same period. Even though violent crimes rose at such an alarming rate, only one murder occurred during this time in Cortland County.
